We’ve all seen them: the personal development posts brimming with smug advice from bouncy influencers. “I’ve got the secret to success and wealth!” they shout. “This is all you need to do to smash your goals and ‘win’ the day.”

If only life could be ‘solved’ by getting out of bed at 4:00 am and running twelve miles, drinking ice water with a squeeze of lemon and bullet journaling before 6:00 am. If it was that easy I’d be a party-poppin’ billionaire.

Self-help advice like that makes my blood boil.

Here’s one my favourites: 8 Things Every Person Should Do Before 8 A.M. It’s wow. Just wow.

Any post built on the premise that the author knows what every person (every person, far out) should do — advice so compelling the author feels they must share it— is destined to be patronising rubbish.

The post is all about privileged white guy life.

Okay, okay, I’m a privileged white person too. But I’ve also survived edge-of-the-abyss sole parenthood, serious physical trauma, and spent months in sub-Saharan Africa, where a used plastic bag is a precious…
